The Treasury Bid Just Turned Negative

The Treasury Bid Just Turned Negative

Why Read Today’s Newsletter

For the first time in modern Bitcoin treasury history:

Public companies bought 7,800 BTC in February.

Public companies sold 8,600 BTC.

Net result: –800 BTC.

The sector that once provided a structural bid is now flat to negative.

That matters.

The Bitcoin treasury model was built on a powerful narrative:

Public companies accumulate relentlessly.

That narrative has now fractured.

Even before accounting for sales, February buying was:

  • Lower than January
  • Lower than December
  • Lower than any month in 2025

And once sales are included, the sector posted a net decline.

This is a structural shift.

The Signals That Matter Today

Signal 1. Buying Is Slowing Sharply

Strategy still dominated purchases:

  • 5,075 BTC added
  • 65% of all monthly buying

But that purchase was significantly smaller than prior months.

Outside of Strategy:

  • Coinbase added 841 BTC
  • MARA added 572 BTC
  • Cleanspark added 414 BTC
  • DDC Enterprise added 335 BTC
  • American Bitcoin added 196 BTC
  • Block added 103 BTC

The additions are real.

But the scale is shrinking.

Signal 2. Sales Are No Longer Isolated

Major reductions included:

  • Cango selling 4,451 BTC
  • Trump Media posting 2,000 BTC as hedge collateral
  • Fold releasing 521 BTC to eliminate convertible debt
  • Bitdeer eliminating 1,508 BTC entirely

This is not forced liquidation chaos. This is balance-sheet recalibration. Debt reduction. Collateral management. Liquidity discipline.

In other words:

Treasury companies are acting like financial entities, not ideology vehicles.

Signal 3. The Hedging Market Is Waking Up

Large ETF holders and treasury firms are reportedly buying six- and twelve-month $60,000 puts.

That tells you something.

The sector is no longer assuming price recovery.

It is buying insurance.

Treasury v1 assumed: Time solves volatility.

Treasury v2 assumes:Volatility must be architected around.

When treasuries hedge, behavior changes.

When treasuries sell, feedback loops change.

When treasuries stop net buying, marginal price support thins.

What This Means

The Bitcoin treasury bid has shifted from:

Structural accumulator to Conditional participant.

This does not invalidate Bitcoin. It changes the capital dynamic.

In prior months, an 8,000 BTC reduction would still have resulted in net growth.

Now it produces contraction. That is a phase transition.

This is exactly the stress environment Treasury v2 was designed for.

RARTA asks:

Is the expected return still sufficient relative to marginal cost of capital?

SRF asks:

What is our predefined response if net sector flows turn negative?

BEOL asks:

Does our capital stack allow us to hold through extended flat or negative absorption months?

Treasury v1 was accumulation driven by optimism.

Treasury v2 is architecture driven by realism.

The sector is maturing.

And maturity looks like discipline, not euphoria.

It Made Me Pause

For years, the treasury narrative was:

“They will never stop buying.”

Now it is:

“They are managing risk.”

That shift may not feel dramatic. But structurally, it is enormous. Bitcoin is no longer supported by a guaranteed corporate bid. It is supported by capital allocation decisions. And capital allocation is conditional.

Before the Next Drawdown, Audit Your Architecture

If your board holds Bitcoin or is evaluating treasury exposure, ask one question:

Are we positioned to accumulate in a negative-flow month, or would we be forced to retrench?

If you want the Treasury v2 executive framework used for that analysis, reply “Treasury v2.”

The accumulation era was simple. The capital discipline era has begun.
